Furosemide
Indications/Uses
Edema, ascites; mild to moderate HTN alone or combination w/ antihypertensives.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially ½-1 tab daily. Further treatment depends on diuresis occurrence. HTN 50 mg or 0.5-1 mg/kg/day. Infant & childn 1-2 mg/kg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Electrolyte deficiency, anuria, hepatic coma, early pregnancy, hypokalemia, concurrent lithium therapy.
Special Precautions
Hepatic or renal insufficiency, prostatic hypertrophy, impaired micturition & hearing. Monitor fluid & electrolytes balance.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal discomfort, orthostatic hypotension, GI disturbances, blurred vision, dizziness, headache.
Drug Interactions
D-tubocurarine; aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, salicylates, lithium & cardiac glycosides; probenecid; alcohol, narcotics, barbiturates.
