Ciprofloxacin
Indications/Uses
Infections of the resp tract, middle ear, sinuses, eyes, kidneys & urinary tract (including prostates), uncomplicated UTI (cystitis), genital organs (including gonorrhea), abdomen (GIT, biliary tract, peritonitis), skin & soft tissues, bones & joints; septicemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Mild UTI 250 mg twice daily. Severe UTI, chronic prostatitis, GI infection 500 mg twice daily. Mild resp tract, bone, joint, skin & soft tissue infections 250-500 mg twice daily. Severe resp tract, bone, joint, skin & soft tissue infections 500-750 mg twice daily. Acute gonorrhea 250 mg daily. Acute osteomyelitis Not <750 mg twice daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <12 yr.
Special Precautions
Epilepsy, CNS damage.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, sleep disorders, rash, pruritus. Rarely, antibiotic-associated colitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome & toxic epidermal necrolysis.
Drug Interactions
Increases plasma-theophylline conc. Enhances effects of coumarin anticoagulants. Absorption reduced by antacids.
