Levofloxacin
Indications/Uses
Adults w/ acute maxillary sinusitis, chronic bronchitis w/ acute exacerbation, community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated skin & skin structure infections, UTI, acute pyelonephritis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab 250-500 mg once daily. Duration of therapy: 7-14 days, depending on the severity of the disease. Infusion 250-500 mg/day by slow IV for 7-14 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Ensure adequate fluid intake.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or other quinolones. Epilepsy. History of tendon disorder related to fluoroquinolones. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescents.
Special Precautions
Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV light. CNS disorders predisposing to seizure or lower seizure threshold. Neurological disorders. Monitor blood glucose levels in patients on hypoglycemic therapy. Perform blood, renal & liver function tests upon prolonged therapy. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
Tendinitis, hypersensitivity reactions (drug eruption, urticarial, macular erythema, Stevens-Johnson syndrome), diarrhea, vomiting, vaginitis, flatulence, pruritus, skin redness, abdominal pain, genital moniliasis, dizziness, dyspepsia, insomnia, taste disturbances, anorexia, anxiety, constipation, edema, tiredness, headache, increased sweating, leucorrhea, malaise, nervousness, sleeping disturbances, tremor.
Drug Interactions
Theophylline, warfarin, cyclosporin, digoxin, NSAIDs, oral antidiabetic agents.
