Montelukast Na
Prophylaxis & chronic treatment of asthma. Symptomatic relief of daytime & nighttime seasonal allergic rhinitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Asthma &/or seasonal allergic rhinitis Ped patient 6-14 yr One 5-mg chewable tab daily, 2-5 yr One 4-mg chewable tab daily.
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Not for acute asthma attacks. Not as substitute for short-acting β-agonists. Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Neuropsychiatric events. Avoid aspirin or NSAIDs in patients w/ known aspirin sensitivity. Monitor patients during systemic corticosteroid dose reduction. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Unsuitable for phenylketonurics. Pregnancy & lactation. 4 mg: Ped <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Palpitations, allergic granulomatosis angiitis; skin & subcutaneous tissue, musculoskeletal & connective tissue disorders; abdominal & dental pain, gastroenteritis, indigestion, tooth infection, nausea, pancreatitis, tonsillitis, vomiting; blood coagulation disorder; hepatic & renal effects; hypersensitivity reactions; asthenia, disorientation, dizziness, headache, hyperactive behavior, hypoesthesia, insomnia, paresthesia, seizure, sinus headache, drowsiness, tremor; ophth, otic & psychiatric effects; bronchitis, cough, epistaxis, laryngitis, nasal congestion & discharge, pharyngitis, pneumonia, upper resp tract infection, rhinitis, sinusitis, wheezing; fatigue, fever, influenza, malaise, traumatic injury.
Drug Interactions
Elevated plasma conc w/ gemfibrozil. Severe peripheral edema w/ prednisone. Increased repaglinide plasma conc. Decreased bioavailability w/ phenobarb, rifampin. Concomitant use w/ CYP3A4 inducers eg, phenytoin, phenobarb, rifampicin.
