Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of herpes simplex virus infections, genital herpes of skin & mucous membranes & herpes zoster infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Herpes simplex 200 mg 5 times daily for 5 days. Severely immunocompromised 400 mg 5 times daily. Severe renal dysfunction 200 mg bd. Prophylaxis of herpes simplex Immunocompetent patient 200 mg qds. Immunocompromised patient 200-400 mg qds. Herpes zoster 800 mg 5 times daily for 7 days. Moderate renal dysfunction 800 mg tds. Severe renal dysfunction 800 mg bd. Prophylaxis of herpes zoster Immunocompetent patient 400 mg qds.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Special Precautions
Lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Skin rashes, GI symptoms, dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, drowsiness.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid reduces acyclovir excretion.
