Should be taken with food: Take at breakfast. Avoid taking near bedtime. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to other sympathomimetic amines. Pulmonary artery & severe arterial HTN. Current or past medical history of CV or cerebrovascular diseases & psychiatric disorders eg, anorexia nervosa & depression. Hyperthyroidism, pheochromocytoma, glaucoma, prostatic adenoma. Propensity towards drug abuse, known alcoholism. Combination w/ other centrally-acting anorectic agents due to increased risk of potentially fatal pulmonary artery HTN. Not to be used w/ MAOIs or w/in 2 wk after w/drawal of MAOIs. Renal insufficiency. 1st trimester of pregnancy. Lactation. Childn <12 yr. Elderly.
Prolonged treatment may give rise to pharmacological tolerance & drug dependence & more rarely to severe psychotic disorders in predisposed patients. Ensure gradual & controlled wt loss in obese patients subject to risk of vascular disease. Epileptic patients. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery.
Reduced effect by phenothiazine & other psychotropic drugs eg, chlorpromazine, haloperidol & TCAs. Antagonized hypotensive effect of guanethidine & other antihypertensives. May cause hypertensive crisis w/ MAOIs. Potentiated effects by other CNS stimulants & caffeine. May lead to cardiac arrhythmias w/ inhalation anesth. Increased risk of potentially fatal pulmonary artery HTN w/ other centrally-acting anorectic agent.
