Alendronate Na
Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women & prevents fractures in men.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at least 30 min before the 1st food/drink/medication of the day w/ a full glass of plain water & remain in sitting/upright position for at least 30 min. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Hypersensitivity. Esophageal abnormalities, inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 min, hypocalcemia.
Special Precautions
Not to be given in patients w/ esophageal abnormalities or other factors that may delay esophageal emptying, those unable to stand or sit upright for at least 30 min. History of upper GI disease (eg, dysphagia, esophageal diseases, gastritis, duodenitis, ulcers). Correct hypocalcemia before starting therapy. Ensure adequate hydration. Not recommended in severe renal impairment (CrCl <35 mL/min). Not to be used during pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain; peptic ulceration; severe esophageal reactions eg, esophagitis, erosions; dysphagia, new or worsening heartburn, pain on swallowing.
Drug Interactions
Impaired absorption by Al-, Ca-, Fe- or Mg-containing compd including antacids, mineral supplements & osmotic laxatives. Increased GI or renal adverse effects w/ NSAIDs. Additive hypocalcaemic effects w/ aminoglycosides.

M05BA04 - alendronic acid ; Belongs to the class of bisphosphonates. Used in the treatment of bone diseases.
