Cefuroxime axetil
Indications/Uses
Upper & lower resp tract, GUT, skin & soft tissue infections, gonorrhoea, acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis, cervicitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Usual duration of therapy: 7 days (5-10 days). Adult Most infections 250 mg bd. UTI 125 mg bd. Mild to moderate lower resp tract infections 250 mg bd. More severe lower resp tract infections, suspected pneumonia 500 mg bd. Pyelonephritis 250 mg bd. Uncomplicated gonorrhoea 1 g as single dose. Childn Most infections 125 mg bd, max: 250 mg. Childn ≥2 yr More severe infections, otitis media 250 mg bd, max: 500 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Prolonged use. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, pseudomembranous colitis, headache. Rarely, thrombocytopenia & leucopenia, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, hypersensitivity reactions.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid.
