Moxifloxacin
Indications/Uses
Bacterial infections caused by susceptible strains: Community-acquired pneumonia, complicated skin & skin structure infections, intra-abdominal infections including polymicrobial infections eg, abscesses. Tab: Acute sinusitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, combination therapy for mild to moderately severe inflammatory pelvic disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Tab 400 mg once daily. Soln for infusion 250 mL once daily infused IV over 60 min.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to quinolones. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity. Discontinue use at the 1st sign of pain or inflammation. QT interval prolongation; bullous skin reactions eg, Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis; seizure; antibiotic-associated colitis; myasthenia gravis, complicated pelvic disease; tendon inflammation & rupture; sensory or sensorimotor polyneuropathy cases; psychiatric reactions; hypo- & hyperglycaemia, dysglycemia. Na restricted patients. Not recommended for treatment of MRSA infection. Concurrent use w/ corticosteroids, oral hypoglycemic agent or insulin. May affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. Fulminant hepatitis leading to hepatic failure. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Mycotic superinfections; headache, dizziness; QT prolongation in patients w/ hypokalaemia, nausea, vomiting, GI & abdominal pain, diarrhea; increased transaminases; inj & infusion site reactions.
Drug Interactions
Reduced efficacy w/ antacids, anti-retroviral drugs eg, didanosine, Mg-, Al-, Fe- or Zn-containing prep & sucralfate. Reduced bioavailability w/ charcoal.
