Promethazine HCl
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief of allergy or hypersensitivity reactions eg, hay fever, urticaria, angioedema, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, pruritic skin disorders; night sedation, motion sickness, vertigo.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 20 mg at night, may be increased to 50 or 75 mg as needed. Nausea & vomiting 25 mg 4-6 hrly, max: 100 mg/24 hr. Allergic conditions 10-20 mg bd-tds, max: 60 mg daily. Hypersensitivity reactions Childn 5-10 yr 10-25 mg daily, 2-5 yr 5-15 mg daily. Sedation Childn 5-10 yr 20-25 mg, 2-5 yr 15-20 mg daily. Prevention of motion sickness Childn 5-10 yr 10 mg, 2-5 yr 5 mg.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Coma, CNS depression, neonates, prematures, MAOI therapy w/in 14 days.
Special Precautions
Narrow-angle glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, CV disease, prostatic hypertrophy, stenosing peptic ulcer, pyloroduodenal obstruction, bladder-neck obstruction. Hypersensitivity to sulfites. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Sedation, inabilitiy to concentrate, lassitude, dizziness, hypotension, muscular weakness, incoordination, GI disturbances, headache, blurred vision, tinnitus, elation or depression, irritability, nightmares, anorexia, difficulty in micturition, dry mouth, chest tightness, tingling, heaviness & weakness of hands.
Drug Interactions
CNS depressants eg, alcohol, barbiturates, hypnotics, narcotic analgesics, sedatives & tranquillisers, aminoglycosides, MAOIs.
