Ciprofloxacin HCl
Indications/Uses
Resp tract, ENT, GI, biliary tract, ocular, skin & soft tissue, bone & joint, O&G, oral, dental or maxillary infections, UTI, kidney infections, genital infections including gonorrhea & adnexitis, sepsis, peritonitis. Prophylaxis & selective intestinal decontamination in immunosuppressed patients. Treatment & prophylaxis of anthrax.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Lower & upper UTI 125 mg bd. Severe UTI 250-500 mg bd. Resp infections 250-500 mg bd. Other infections 500 mg bd. Severe infections 750 mg bd. Acute, uncomplicated gonorrhea in women & men (urethritis) & uncomplicated cystitis in women 250 mg as single dose. Threatening infections 750 mg bd. Chlamydia UTI 750 mg bd for min 10 days. Duration: Acute, uncomplicated gonorrhea in men 1 day. Infections of the kidneys, urinary tract & peritoneum 7 days. Osteomyelitis 2 mth. Childn & adolescent 5-17 yr w/ cystic fibrosis 20 mg/kg divided into 2 single doses 12 hrly for 10-14 days. Max: 750 mg bd. Anthrax Adult 500 mg bd. Childn 15 mg/kg bd. Max: 500 mg. Duration: 60 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI discomfort. Take 1-2 hr before or 4 hr after Fe, sucralfate or antacids & strongly buffered prep containing Mg, Al or Ca. Do not take w/ dairy products. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to quinolones. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescents.
Special Precautions
Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Epilepsy, lowered convulsion threshold, history of convulsions, impaired cerebral circulation, cerebral structural changes or stroke. Avoid prolonged or repeated use. Renal impairment. Ensure adequate hydration.
Adverse Reactions
GI, CNS disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, tachycardia, blood dyscrasias.
Drug Interactions
Fe & divalent cations, sucralfate, antacids, theophylline, NSAIDs, ciclosporin, warfarin, glibenclamide, probenecid, metoclopramide, MTX.
