Bisoprolol fumarate
Indications/Uses
HTN, CHD (angina pectoris), stable chronic moderate to severe heart failure w/ reduced systolic ventricular function in addition to ACE inhibitors, diuretics & optionally, cardiac glycosides.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualised dosage. Usual starting dose 2.5-5 mg once daily. May be increased to 10 mg. Max: 20 mg once daily if necessary.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Cardiogenic shock, overt cardiac failure, 2nd or 3rd degree AV block & marked sinus bradycardia.
Special Precautions
Cardiac failure, peripheral vascular disease, bronchospastic disease, patient under anaesth & major surgery, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism. Renal or hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, headache; dry mouth; bradycardia, cold extremities, vivid dreams, insomnia, depression; GI disturbances; muscle/joint or back/neck pain, muscle cramps, skin rashes; visual disturbances, taste abnormalities; gout; resp disturbances, decreased libido/impotence, malaise, edema, wt gain.
Drug Interactions
Other β-blocking agents, catecholamine-depleting drugs eg, reserpine or guanethidine, clonidine; myocardial depressants or AV conduction inhibitors eg, verapamil, diltiazem, antiarrhythmic drugs eg, disopyramide; rifampin.
