Calcitriol
Indications/Uses
Management of hypocalcemia in patients undergoing chronic renal dialysis. Significant reduction of elevated parathyroid hormone levels.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 0.5 mcg 3 times wkly, may be increased to 0.25-0.5 mcg at 2-4 wk intervals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hypercalcemia, evidence of vit D toxicity.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if hypercalcemia develops. Not to be used for bone loss treatment after implantation & post-menopausal osteoporosis. Monitor serum Ca, P, Mg, alkaline phosphatase, urinary Ca & P periodically. Concomitant use w/ digitalis. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Weakness, headache, somnolence, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, muscle pain, bone pain, metallic taste.
Drug Interactions
Hypermagnesemia w/ Mg-containing antacids. Cardiac arrhythmia w/ cardioglycosides. Reduced efficacy w/ barbiturates or anticonvulsants. Antagonization by corticosteroids. Precipitated cardiac arrhythmias w/ digitalis.
