Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take at the same time each day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Active venous thromboembolic disorder; known or suspected sex steroid-sensitive malignancies; undiagnosed vag bleeding. History of severe hepatic disease. Known or suspected pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if signs of thromboembolic events occur & in long-term immobilisation due to surgery or illness. Breast & liver cancer, HTN, history of venous thromboembolism, chloasma, GI disturbances, follicular development. Diabetic patients especially during 1st mth of therapy. Monitor estradiol serum levels & evaluate changes in vag bleeding pattern. Glucose-galactose malabsorption, Lapp lactase deficiency, galactose intolerance. Ectopic pregnancy. Lactation. Growth & development of breastfed infants.
Adverse Reactions
Mood changes, decreased libido; headache; nausea; acne; breast pain, irregular menstruation, amenorrhoea; increased wt.
Drug Interactions
Decreased efficacy w/ phenytoin, phenobarb, primidone, bosentan, carbamazepine, rifampicin, oxcarbazepine, rifabutin, topiramate, felbamate, griseofulvin, ritonavir, nelfinavir, efavirenz & St. John's wort. Increased or decreased plasma conc w/ HIV PIs eg, nelfinavir, NNRTIs eg, nevirapine &/or HCV medicinal products eg, boceprevir, telaprevir. Increased serum conc w/ strong CYP3A4 inhibitors eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin or moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors eg, fluconazole, diltiazem, erythromycin. Reduced steroid absorption & efficacy w/ medical charcoal. Increased plasma & tissue conc of ciclosporin. Decreased plasma & tissue conc of lamotrigine.
