Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult, childn >1 mth & elderly Funduscopy Instill 1 drop in each eye every 5-10 min, not exceeding 3 times to produce rapid mydriasis. Minimise absorption in premature & small infant Apply pressure over nasolacrimal sac for 2-3 min following instillation. Observe infant closely for at least 30 min.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Narrow-angle glaucoma or anatomically narrow angles.
Special Precautions
CV disease, HTN, hyperthyroidism; CNS disturbances; Down's syndrome. Determine IOP prior to initiation of therapy. Light sensitivity. May cause irritation due to benzalkonium Cl. Avoid contact w/ soft contact lens. Remove contact lens prior to application & wait 15 min before reinsertion. Febrile patients exposed to elevated environmental temp. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Pregnancy & lactation. Infants, young childn, childn w/ epilepsy, spastic paralysis or brain damage. High-dose use especially in elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Convulsion; bradycardia; apnoea; necrotising colitis, abdominal distension.
Drug Interactions
MAOIs, TCAs, certain antihypertensives, atropine.
