Clindamycin HCl
Indications/Uses
Serious infections caused by clindamycin-susceptible strains of streptococci, pneumococci & staphylococci eg, resp tract infections eg, peritonitis & intra-abdominal abscess; female pelvis & genital tract infections eg, endometritis, non-gonococcal tubo-ovarian abscess, pelvic cellulitis & post-op vag cuff infection; skin & soft tissue infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 600-1,800 mg daily divided in 2, 3 or 4 equal doses. Childn >1 mth Serious infection 8-16 mg/kg daily in 3 or 4 equal doses. More severe infection 16-20 mg/kg daily in 3 or 4 equal doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole w/ a full glass of water & in an upright position.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin.
Special Precautions
Not to be used in meningitis. Pseudomembraneous colitis. Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. Overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms. Perform hepatic & renal function test in prolonged therapy. Pregnancy. Not to be used during lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Pseudomembranous colitis; diarrhoea, abdominal pain; abnormal liver function test; maculopapular rash.
Drug Interactions
Antagonism w/ erythromycin. Enhanced action of neuromuscular blocking agents.
