Dextropropoxyphene is used to relieve mild to moderate pain.
Take Dextropropoxyphene exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Do not stop taking Dextropropoxyphene unless instructed otherwise, as stopping it suddenly could worsen your condition.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have any lung disease e.g. asthma, breathing problems or a condition called “paralytic ileus” wherein the bowel does not work properly, as this medicine may not be suitable for you.
Do not take Dextropropoxyphene if you are currently taking or have taken a medicine known as monoamine oxidase inhibitor (used for treating depression) in the last 14 days.
Inform your doctor if you have any of the following:
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- pancreatic disease
- excessive drinking or problems related to drug or alcohol withdrawal
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Dextropropoxyphene may cause drowsiness and dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: weakness, headache, rash, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation and blurred vision.
Some side effects my need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience difficulty breathing, extreme drowsiness, changes in your heartbeat, severe dizziness, confusion or yellowing of your skin or whites of your eyes.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Dextropropoxyphene if you are currently taking or have taken a medicine known as monoamine oxidase inhibitor (used for treating depression) in the last 14 days.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines for heart disease e.g. amiodarone
- medicines for high blood pressure e.g. diltiazem
- blood-thinning medicine e.g. warfarin
- medicines for epilepsy (seizures or fits) e.g. carbamazepine, phenytoin
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. ritonavir
- medicines for fungal infection e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole
- antibiotics e.g. erythromycin, rifampicin
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Dextropropoxyphene.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicine, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
