Bisacodyl
Indications/Uses
Constipation. Prep of diagnostic procedures in pre- & post-op treatment & in conditions which require defaecation to be facilitated.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Constipation Adult & childn >10 yr 1-2 tab daily before bedtime or one 10-mg supp, childn 4-10 yr 1 tab daily before bedtime or one 5-mg supp. Prep for diagnostic procedures in pre- & post-op treatment Adult & childn >10 yr 2 tab in the morning, 2 tab in the evening & one 10-mg supp the following morning, childn 4-10 yr 1 tab in the evening & one 5-mg supp the following morning.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Tab: Preferably taken at night. Take 1 hr before or after antacids, milk or other dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Ileus, intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal conditions eg, appendicitis, acute inflammatory bowel diseases; severe abdominal pain associated w/ nausea & vomiting, severe dehydration. Galactose intolerance eg, galactosaemia; fructose intolerance. Supp: Anal fissures, ulcerative proctitis w/ mucosal damage.
Special Precautions
Not to be taken on continuous daily basis or for extended periods w/o investigating cause of constipation. Discontinue use in patients suffering from fluid loss. Prolonged excessive use. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Pregnancy. Not to be used in childn ≤4 yr. Tab: Not to be taken w/ products reducng upper GIT acidity eg, milk, antacids, proton-pump inhibitors.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain, diarrhoea; abdominal cramps, nausea.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of electrolyte imbalance w/ diuretics or adrenocorticosteroids. Enhanced GI side effects w/ other laxatives.
