Memantine HCl
Indications/Uses
Patients w/ moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially ½ of 10-mg tab (5 mg daily) on the 1st wk, one 10-mg tab daily on the 2nd wk, then one ½ of 10-mg tab (15 mg daily) on the 3rd wk, from 4th wk thereafter, continue treatment w/ maintenance dose of 20 mg daily. Max: 20 mg once daily. Elderly >65 yr 20 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
History of seizure disorders. Epilepsy. Co-administration w/ N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists (eg, amantadine, ketamine or dextromethorphan). Careful monitoring of patients w/ factors that may raise urine pH. Recent MI, uncompensated CHF, uncontrolled HTN. Not recommended in patients w/ severe hepatic impairment. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, headache, constipation, somnolence, HTN; dyspnoea & hypersensitivity.
Drug Interactions
Levodopa, dopaminergic agonists, anticholinergics, barbiturates, neuroleptics, antispasmodic agents (dantrolene or baclofen), phenytoin, cimetidine, ranitidine, procainamide, quinidine, quinine, nicotine, hydrochlorothiazide. Avoid administration w/ amantadine, ketamine & dextromethorphan.
