Indications/Uses
Chronic hyperuricaemia in conditions where urate deposition has already occurred including history, or presence of tophus &/or gouty arthritis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Recommended dose: 40 or 80 mg once daily. Initially 40 mg once daily. If serum uric acid is >6 mg/dL after 2-4 wk, may increase to 80 mg once daily. Gout flare prophylaxis At least 6 mth therapy.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if allergic/hypersensitivity reactions including life-threatening Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, acute anaphylactic reaction/shock; gout flare occur. Not to be initiated until acute gout attack subsides completely. Avoid use in patients w/ pre-existing major CV diseases eg, MI, stroke or unstable angina. Not recommended in patients whom rate of urate formation is greatly increased; in organ transplant recipients. Exacerbation &/or onset of CV disease; thyroid function alteration. Perform liver function test prior to & periodically thereafter. Galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Not recommended in patients concomitantly treated w/ mercaptopurine/azathioprine. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Severe renal & moderate to severe hepatic impairment. Not to be used during pegnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Gout flares; headache; diarrhoea, nausea; liver function abnormalities; rash; oedema.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc w/ mercaptopurine/azathioprine. Affected elimination w/ NSAIDs, probenecid. Increased metabolism & decreased efficacy by potent UGT enzyme inducers.

M04AA03 - febuxostat ; Belongs to the class of preparations inhibiting uric acid production. Used in the treatment of gout.
