Indications/Uses
Infections caused by susceptible organisms especially Staph eg, osteomyelitis, septicaemia, endocarditis, superinfected cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, skin & soft tissue infections, surgical & traumatic wound infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 500 mg tds. Skin & soft tissue infection 250 mg bd, may be doubled in severe cases.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Concomitant use w/ statins.
Special Precautions
Biliary disease & tract obstruction; impaired bilirubin transport & metabolism. Drug reaction w/ eosinophilia & systemic symptoms, toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell's syndrome), Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Increased risk of developing antibiotic resistance due to extended or recurrent use. Monitor liver function in patients w/ hepatic dysfunction. High-dose or prolonged use. Not to be used in galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Not to be co-administered w/ statins. Concomitant use w/ HIV PIs. Elevated hepatic enzymes, jaundice. Avoid use during pregnancy. Lactation. Risk of kernicterus in neonates.
Adverse Reactions
Vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain & discomfort, dyspepsia, nausea; lethargy/fatigue/asthenia.
Drug Interactions
Risk of rhabdomyolysis w/ statins. Altered anticoagulant effect of anticoagulants. Hepatotoxicity w/ HIV PIs eg, ritonavir, saquinavir.
