Metformin HCl
Indications/Uses
NIDDM.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 500 mg tds or 750 mg bd. Max: 3 g daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Heart failure, dehydration, acute or chronic alcoholism, or any other condition likely to predispose lactic acidosis. IDDM, ketoacidosis, severe infection, stress, trauma. Conditions associated w/ hypoxaemia. Hepatic or renal impairment. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Discontinue therapy 2-3 days before surgery & reinstate after regaining control of renal function. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Anorexia, nausea, diarrhoea, metallic taste, wt loss, lactic acidosis, impaired vit B12 absorption.
Drug Interactions
Increased hypoglycaemic effect w/ sulphonylureas. Adjust dosage of anticoagulants if used concomitantly. Increased risk of lactic acidosis w/ cimetidine.
