Description
L-Mesitran Active: L-Mesitran Active is a hydro-active, low-adherence, honey containing dressing for use on acute and chronic wounds. L-Mesitran Active is identical to L-Mesitran Hydro, but has different sizes.
L-Mesitran Active is sterile, semi-permeable wound dressing containing 30% honey, an acrylic polymer gel and water with a polyurethane film backing with an adhesive border.
The honey-hydrogel pad donates moisture to re-hydrate dry tissue, and is also able to absorb low levels of exudate to help maintain a moist environment conducive to healing. The film backing provides the dressing with bacterial barrier properties.
The adhesive border from the L-Mesitran Active allows the dressing to be fixed securely. This is useful where patients need to shower or bathe with the dressing in place.
L-Mesitran Net: L-Mesitran Net is a sterile, open-weave mesh dressing coated with a hydro-active honey-hydrogel for use on acute and chronic wounds.
L-Mesitran Net contains 20% medical grade honey, an acrylic polymer gel and water on a polyester mesh structure that allows passage of exudate through the dressing.
L-Mesitran Net is to be based in conjunction with an appropriate secondary dressing, and can be used in conjunction with L-Mesitran Ointment and Soft.
L-Mesitran Net is a multipurpose protective wound contact layer, where the honey-hydrogel coating provides some absorption and retention of exudate to help maintain a moist environment conducive to healing.
L-Mesitran Ointment: L-Mesitran Ointment is a formulation containing: 48% medical grade honey, medical grade hypoallergenic lanolin (Medilan), sunflower oil, cod liver oil, Calendula officinalis, Aloe Barbadensis, vitamin C & E and zinc oxide. When the ointment is in contact with the wound, fluid is drawn from the surrounding tissues through osmosis. By doing so, a moist wound healing environment is created. This environment stimulates the wound healing process, aids wound bed preparation by facilitating autolysis of necrotic and other devitalised material and promotes better epithelial cell migration.
Due to the strong osmotic activity L-Mesitran Ointment has antimicrobial properties.
The ointment will dilute gradually and can be removed easily as per local wound cleansing protocols.
L-Mesitran Ointment is a primary wound dressing that can be covered with most commonly used secondary dressings.
The properties of the ointment also help prevent the secondary dressing adhering to the wound bed.
Due to the use of natural ingredients, each batch of ointment may vary in colour (white-yellow-brown).
The ointment may contain sugar crystals, however this will not affect the effectiveness and/or application.
Indications/Uses

Contraindications
L-Mesitran Active: Do not use on individuals with a sensitivity to the dressing or any of its components.
The dressing should not be used on: Heavily exuding wounds; Full thickness burns; Deep, narrow cavities or sinuses.
L-Mesitran Net: Do not use on individuals with a known sensitivity to the dressing or its components. L-Mesitran Net should not be used: Without a secondary dressing to prevent the dressing from drying out on the wound and to retain the dressing on the wound; On its own on heavily exuding wounds; On full thickness burns, deep, narrow cavities or sinuses.
L-Mesitran Ointment: Do not use the ointment on patients who are known to be hypersensitive to it or any of its ingredients.
No other contraindications are known to date.
Special Precautions
L-Mesitran Active: The dressing may be used on contaminated and colonized wounds. However where wounds are clinically infected, discontinue use and seek appropriate medical supervision.
Any further treatment for infection should be initiated as per local protocols and under medical guidance.
The bacterial barrier property of the dressing is compromised if the dressing is punctured, is not fully adhered to the skin or exudate escapes from under the edges.
Care should be taken on removal to avoid skin damage due to adhesives, especially for repeated applications.
Do not use if the packaging is damaged or compromised in any way.
Do not use after expiry date.
L-Mesitran Net: The dressing may be used on contaminated and colonized wounds. However where wounds are clinically infected, L-Mesitran should only be used providing appropriate medical supervisions is sought.
Any further treatment for infection should be initiated as per local protocols and under medical guidance.
Appropriate secondary dressings should be used to prevent the dressing from drying out whilst in place.
Do not use if the packaging is damaged or compromised in any way.
Do not use after expiry date.
L-Mesitran Ointment: When opening and applying the ointment from a new tube, ensure that the new tube is not damaged or previously opened.
Consult a doctor or pharmacist if further measures are deemed necessary for proper treatment of the wound.
Inspect and clean the wound according to local protocols before use.
Due to autolytic debridement the wound may appear to increase in size after the first dressing changes. This is normal and occurs as the devitalised tissue is removed, preparing the wound bed for healing.
Bacterial colonisation of chronic wounds is always present and is not a contraindication for using L-Mesitran Ointment.
Seek medical supervision if signs of infection occur (fever, pain, redness and pus) or if the condition of the wound deteriorates.
L-Mesitran Ointment is for use by a single patient only. The tube may be re-used with the same patient.
Always re-seal the tube after use with the screw-top lid.
After the packaging has been opened, provided the product is used in accordance with the instructions described in the IFU, the storage life of the product is equal to the expiry date printed on the packaging.
Storage
L-Mesitran Active, L-Mesitran Net, L-Mesitran Ointment: Store at room temperature between 5°-25°C/41°-77°F. Store dry. Do not freeze.
Avoid direct sunlight and moisture. L-Mesitran is a natural product and the gel may become liquid under higher temperatures. If this is expected to be a problem, then the dressing (without the outer carton) may be placed in a fridge prior to use.
