Contents
Per Maalox 4.3 mL oral susp Mg hydroxide 400 mg, Al hydroxide 460 mg. Per Maalox Plus tab Mg hydroxide 200 mg, Al hydroxide 200 mg, simethicone 26.25 mg. Per Maalox Plus 5 mL oral susp Mg hydroxide 200 mg, Al hydroxide 175 mg, simethicone 25 mg
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief of hyperacidity associated w/ diagnosis of peptic ulcer, gastritis, peptic oesophagitis, gastric hyperacidity, heartburn or hiatal hernia. Maalox Plus Antiflatulent for symptomatic alleviation of gas pain including post-op gas pain.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Maalox Adult ≥15 yr 1-2 sachets. Max: 12 sachets daily. Maalox Plus tab Adult 2-4 tab qds. Maalox Plus oral susp Adult 2-4 tsp qds.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take 20 min-1 hr after meals. Tab: Chew well.
Contraindications
Severe renal insufficiency. Maalox Hypersensitivity. Fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrase-isomaltase deficiency. Maalox Plus Severe debilitation. Not to be used >2 wk in patients w/ renal disease.
Special Precautions
Maalox Wt loss; difficulty swallowing or persistent abdominal discomfort; digestive disorders occurring for the 1st time or recent changes in existing disorders. Renal insufficiency. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI disorders eg, diarrhea or constipation; P depletion (prolonged or high doses).
Drug Interactions
Reduced GI absorption of H2-antagonists, atenolol, chloroquine, tetracyclines, diflunisal, digoxin, biphosphonates, ethambutol, fluoroquinolones, Na fluoride, glucocorticoids (prednisolone & dexamethasone), indomethacin, INH, kayexalate, ketoconazole, lincosamides, metoprolol, phenothiazinic neuroleptics, penicillamines, propranolol, Fe salts. Wait at least 2 hr before taking Maalox/Maalox Plus to avoid interaction w/ other drugs. Maalox Reduced GI absorption of fexofenadine, lansoprazole, P supplements, thyroxine. Increased renal excretion of salicylates through urine alkalinization. Maalox Plus Increased serum quinidine levels. Increased Al levels w/ citrates.
