Netilmicin sulfate
Indications/Uses
Serious infections of the resp tract; kidney, GUT, skin & soft tissues, bone & joints, GIT, intra-abdominal infections (including peritonitis), CNS (including meningitis); burns, wounds, peri-op infections, bacteremia, septicemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV Adult 4-6 mg/kg daily in 3 equally divided doses 8 hrly or 2 equally divided doses 12 hrly, 50-90 kg 150 mg 12 hrly or 100 mg 8 hrly, 40-50 kg 100 mg 12 hrly. Life-threatening infections Up to 7.5 mg/kg daily in 3 equally divided doses 8 hrly, reduce to ≤6 mg/kg daily w/in 48 hr as clinically indicated. Childn 6-7.5 mg/kg daily 8 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity & serious toxic reaction to aminoglycosides.
Special Precautions
Hearing loss & vestibular dysfunction. Oral ingestion of metabisulfite. High dose or prolonged therapy. Greater risk of nephrotoxicity in patients w/ renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
Additive neurotoxic, ototoxic & nephrotoxic effects w/ other aminoglycosides, acyclovir, amphotericin B, bacitracin, capreomycin, cephalosporins, colistin, cisplatin, methoxyflurane, polymyxin B, vancomycin. Potentiated neuromuscular blockade w/ general anesth or neuromuscular blocking agents eg, succinylcholine, tubocurarine.
