Freeze-dried yeast Saccharomyces boulardii (Saccharomyces cerevisiae HANSEN CBS 5926)
Indications/Uses
Acute diarrhea in childn & adults. Prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea in childn & adults. Prevention of tube feeding-associated diarrhea & C difficile recurrence in adults.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 or 2 cap once-bd. Childn >6 yr 1-2 cap daily. Duration of treatment: Acute infectious diarrhea Approx: 1 wk. Prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea Start treatment w/in 48-72 hr, continue at least 3 days & not >4 wk. Prevention of C difficile recurrence Start as soon as possible & continue for 4 wk. Prevention of tube feeding-associated diarrhea During period of tube feeding. Max duration of treatment in usual indications: 4 wk.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow w/ a glass of water. For childn <6 yr unable to swallow, empty contents into feeding bottle or glass of water/juice.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ central venous catheter. Critically ill or immunocompromised patients due to risk of fungaemia.
Special Precautions
Central venous catheter, critically ill or immunocompromised patients. May cause systemic fungal infections by migration. Ensure adequate hydration. Not recommended during pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Flatulence; rash, cutaneous allergy, urticaria, pruritus; swelling below skin surfaces, breathing difficulties.
Drug Interactions
Impaired effects w/ antimycotic agents. Increased BP w/ MAOIs.
