Nystatin is used to treat fungal infections of the skin.
Apply Nystatin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not apply more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as a cream, ointment, or as a topical dusting powder.
To use the cream, ointment or topical dusting powder, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry the affected area before application.
- Apply the medicine onto the infected area. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the affected area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after each application.
Avoid inhaling the powder or any contact of this medicine with your eyes. Rinse immediately with water if it accidentally gets into your eyes. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on your condition and response to the medication.
Nystatin must be used regularly for it to be effective. Continue using this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop using it unless instructed by the doctor.
Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not use Nystatin if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Maintain good hygiene as this is important in managing fungal infections.
Keep a towel or flannel for your own use. Do not share clothing especially those that come into direct contact with the affected area, such as socks. Change and wash clothes frequently to avoid spreading the infection to other areas of your body or to other people.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
Nystatin may cause any of the following side effects: skin irritation such as burning sensation, itching, rashes and pain on the application site.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- rashes with peeling of the skin or blistering of the lips, mouth or eyes accompanied by fever
- rashes, breathlessness, swollen face, eyes, tongue or throat
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Let your doctor know if you are using any other creams, ointments or other medicines on the affected area.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Protect from heat, moisture or light. Do not freeze.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
