Indications/Uses
Infections caused by benzylpenicillin-resistant Staph infections; bone & joint infections; sinusitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >20 kg 250-500 mg 6 hrly. Max adult dose: Up to 6 g daily. Infant & childn ≤20 kg 6.25-12.5 mg/kg 6 hrly.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or cephamycins, history of allergy. Syphilis (risk of Jarisch-Herxheimer reactions). History of GI disease especially antibiotic-associated colitis. Monitor renal & hematological status during prolonged & high-dose therapy. Avoid contact w/ skin. Prolonged therapy. Hepatic & renal impairment. Lactation. Neonates, young infants. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, headache, oral & vag candidiasis. Allergic reactions & skin reactions.
Drug Interactions
Avoid concurrent therapy w/ bacteriostatic drugs eg, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, sulfonamides or tetracyclines. OCs, methotrexate, hepatotoxic agents, probenecid.
