Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult : PO GI spasm 10-40 mL/day in 3-4 divided doses as necessary. Irritable bowel syndrome Each cap contains 0.2 mL peppermint oil: 1-2 cap tid. Max duration of treatment: 3 months. Topical Pruritic skin disorders As 0.3% soln: Apply and rub rapidly for 10 seconds onto affected area. Transdermal Topical analgesia As 0.3% patch: Apply onto affected area up to 3 days, if desired.
Dosage Details
Oral
IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)
Adult: Each cap contains 0.2 mL peppermint oil: 1 cap tid, may increase to 2 cap tid. Max duration of treatment: 3 months.
Child: ≥15 year Same as adult dose.

Oral
Gastrointestinal tract spasm
Adult: 10-40 mL daily in 3-4 divided doses as necessary.
Child: >12 yr Same as adult dose.

Topical/Cutaneous
Pruritic skin disorders
Adult: As 0.3% soln: Apply and rub rapidly for 10 seconds onto affected area.
Child: ≥2 year Same as adult dose.

Transdermal
Topical analgesia
Adult: As 0.3% patch: Apply onto affected area up to 3 days, if desired.
Child: ≥10 yr Same as adult dose.
Special Precautions
Patient w/ GERD, GI inflammation/ulceration, biliary diseases (e.g. bile obstruction, cholangitis, gallstones), hiatal hernia. Childn. Pregnancy and lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Significant: Heartburn, perianal irritation, severe constipation, blood in faeces, difficulty or pain during urination, abnormal vag bleeding or discharge, wt loss, anorexia, fever.
Immunologic: Rarely, allergic reactions (manifested by headache, bradycardia, ataxia, tremor, anaphylactic shock, erythematous skin rash).
Overdosage
Symptoms: Severe nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, vertigo, drowsiness, ataxia, coma. Management: Symptomatic and supportive treatment. Perform gastric lavage.
Drug Interactions
May interfere w/ the clearance of drugs which are mediated by CYP3A4 enzyme.
Food Interaction
May exacerbate adverse effects w/ alcohol.
Action
Description: Peppermint oil is an aromatic carminative that exerts its effect locally rather than systemically. It causes colonic relaxation and decreases intra-colonic pressure by interfering w/ the mobilisation of Ca ions.
Storage
Store below 25°C.
