Description
Each 100 g Peptamen powder contains energy 456 kCal, protein 18.5 g, fat 18 g, carbohydrates 57.2 g, vitamin A 690 mcg, vitamin D 9.3 mcg, vitamin E 5.8 mgα-TE, vitamin K 47 mcg, vitamin C 60 mg, thiamine (B1) 1 mg, riboflavin (B2) 1 mg, niacin 4.5 mg, vitamin B6 1.1 mg, folic acid 170 mcg, pantothenic acid 4.3 mg, vitamin B12 2.1 mcg, biotin 15 mcg, choline 220 mg, taurine 58 mg, L-carnitine 50 mg, sodium 395 mg, potassium 520 mg, chloride 255 mg, calcium 465 mg, phosphorus 325 mg, magnesium 114 mg, manganese 1 mg, iron 7.2 mg, iodine 104 mcg, copper 0.6 mg, zinc 5 mg, selenium 34 mcg, chromium 22 mcg, molybdenum 47 mcg.
Peptamen is isocaloric (1 kCal/mL), nutritionally complete, peptide diet designed to provide nutritional support in a readily absorbable form to patients with gastrointestinal impairment. It has an energy distribution of protein 16%, lipid 34%, and carbohydrate 50%.
Peptamen is lactose-free, gluten-free and is Halal certified.
Proteins: Peptides, from 100% hydrolysed whey protein, provide an easily absorbed and utilised source of nitrogen: 4 g/100 kcal. In patient with serious illness, 70% of protein is absorbed in peptide form. Nitrogen 1 g/156 total calories; nitrogen 1 g/131 nonprotein calories.
Lipids: The lipid sources are medium chain triglycerides (MCT), soya oil and soya lecithin. MCT, representing 70% of the lipids fraction, are easily absorbable and rapidly utilised source of energy.
Essential fatty acids provide 5% kcal.
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are provided by maltodextrin to maintain a low osmolality. Carbohydrate 12.3 g/100 kcal. This is a moderate carbohydrate formula which is important for those with hyperglycemia.
Micronutrients: Vitamins and minerals meet 100% of the US RDA with 1500 mL (1500 kcal).
Residue/Fibre: Peptamen is a low residue diet.
Osmolality: 375 mOsmol/kg H2O. Peptamen with low osmolality for enhanced feeding tolerance.
Indications/Uses
Peptide-based for enteral tube and oral feeding for age ≥10 years. Peptamen is appropriate for patients with compromised gastrointestinal function: Dual-feeding with TPN and long-term tube feeding.
Clinical applications include: Early postsurgical feeding, diarrhoea, hypoalbuminemia, pancreatic insufficiency, short bowel syndrome, HIV/AIDS, Crohn's disease, during cancer treatment, radiation enteritis, cystic fibrosis and elevated gastric residuals.
Dosage/Direction for Use
For oral and tube feeding.
6 scoops or 55 g in 210 mL water provide 250 kcal. Tube Feeding: May be fed at full strength and often at full rate from day 1 to provide maximal nutritional support.
Storage
Store unopened can at room temperature. Once opened, cover the can and store in a dry location, at room temperature, and use the contents within 30 days of opening.
