Peptamen is isocaloric (1 kCal/mL), nutritionally complete, peptide diet designed to provide nutritional support in a readily absorbable form to patients with gastrointestinal impairment. It has an energy distribution of protein 16%, lipid 34%, and carbohydrate 50%.
Peptamen is lactose-free, gluten-free and is Halal certified.
Proteins: Peptides, from 100% hydrolysed whey protein, provide an easily absorbed and utilised source of nitrogen: 4 g/100 kcal. In patient with serious illness, 70% of protein is absorbed in peptide form. Nitrogen 1 g/156 total calories; nitrogen 1 g/131 nonprotein calories.
Lipids: The lipid sources are medium chain triglycerides (MCT), soya oil and soya lecithin. MCT, representing 70% of the lipids fraction, are easily absorbable and rapidly utilised source of energy.
Essential fatty acids provide 5% kcal.
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are provided by maltodextrin to maintain a low osmolality. Carbohydrate 12.3 g/100 kcal. This is a moderate carbohydrate formula which is important for those with hyperglycemia.
Micronutrients: Vitamins and minerals meet 100% of the US RDA with 1500 mL (1500 kcal).
Residue/Fibre: Peptamen is a low residue diet.
Osmolality: 375 mOsmol/kg H2O. Peptamen with low osmolality for enhanced feeding tolerance.
Peptide-based for enteral tube and oral feeding for age ≥10 years. Peptamen is appropriate for patients with compromised gastrointestinal function: Dual-feeding with TPN and long-term tube feeding.
Clinical applications include: Early postsurgical feeding, diarrhoea, hypoalbuminemia, pancreatic insufficiency, short bowel syndrome, HIV/AIDS, Crohn's disease, during cancer treatment, radiation enteritis, cystic fibrosis and elevated gastric residuals.
For oral and tube feeding.
6 scoops or 55 g in 210 mL water provide 250 kcal. Tube Feeding: May be fed at full strength and often at full rate from day 1 to provide maximal nutritional support.
