Ephedrine HCl
Indications/Uses
Hypotension during spinal anaesth.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Vasopressor IM or SC 25-50 mg, repeat if necessary. IV Administer 5-25 mg slowly, repeat in 5-10 min if necessary.
Contraindications
Coronary thrombosis, thyrotoxicosis, HTN & closed-angle glaucoma.
Special Precautions
Organic heart disease, cardiac decompensation or angina of effort & concurrent digitalis therapy. Prostatic enlargement. Avoid use after 4 pm due to its stimulant effect. Angle-closure glaucoma. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Anxiety, restlessness, nausea, muscular weakness & tremors, sweating & thirst, dermatitis, insomnia & urinary retention.
Drug Interactions
Glucocorticoid, adrenocorticoids, corticotropine, urinary alkalizers, α-adrenergic blockers, diatrizoates, iothalamate, ioxaglate, ergot alkaloids, methysergide, oxytocin, doxapram, guanadrel, guanethidine, mazindol, mecamylamine, methyldopa, trimethaphan, methylphenidate & rauwolfia alkaloids.
