Pethidine HCl
Moderate to severe pain, obstet analgesia, preop analgesia, enhancement of anaesth, for basal narcosis w/ phenothiazines.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC or IM 25-100 mg 4 hrly. Obstet analgesia SC or IM 50-100 mg every 1-3 hr if necessary. Max: 400 mg in 24 hr. Elderly & debilitated patient Max initial dose: 35 mg inj. Childn IM Single dose of 0.5-2 mg/kg, repeat if necessary but not >4 hrly. Slow IV 25-50 mg 4 hrly.
History of hypersensitivity or idiosyncratic response; severe liver disease, acute alcoholism, bronchial asthma, increased intracranial pressure, resp depression, under MAOI treatment w/in 14 days, hypotension. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Decreased resp reserve or those receiving other CNS depressant drugs; presence of phenobarb or any other enzyme-inducing agents. Administration during labour; supraventricular tachycardia; head injuries, biliary tract disorders, hypothyroidism, adrenocortical insuficiency, shock, prostatic hypertrophy; renal failure, cancer or sickle anaemia. Cross-tolerance between narcotic analgesics can occur. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Hepatic disease. Severe renal impairment. Newborn, premature infants or childn <1 yr. Elderly & debilitated.
Adverse Reactions
Constipation, resp depression, cough suppression, urinary retention, nausea & tolerance; mild euphoria, dizziness, nausea & vomiting, urticaria & other skin rashes, hypotension & CNS excitation.
Drug Interactions
Increased CNS & resp depression & hypotensive effect w/ alcohol & CNS depressants.
