Theophylline
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief & prevention of asthma & reversible bronchospasm associated w/ chronic bronchitis & emphysema.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 400-600 mg as single dose in the evening or 200-300 mg 12 hrly. Childn >30 kg 200 mg bd, 20-30 kg 150 mg bd, 12-20 kg 100 mg bd. Patient not previously treated ½ of maintenance dose for 1st 4-7 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush. Tab may be cut into half.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
CHF, severe HTN or hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, viral infections. Smokers. Hepatic disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances (nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, gastric pain), palpitations, cardiac arrhythmias, CNS stimulation.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc w/ cimetidine, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, troleandomycin, oestrogen, allopurinol, propranolol. Reduced serum conc w/ phenytoin, phenobarb, rifampicin. Decreased plasma conc of lithium. Potentiated hypokalemia caused by β2-sympathomimetics, steroids, diuretics. Reduced threshold value for inducing convulsions w/ ketamine.
