Montelukast
Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis & chronic treatment of asthma. Symptomatic relief of day- & nighttime seasonal allergic rhinitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Asthma &/or seasonal allergic rhinitis Ped patient 6-14 yr One 5-mg chewable tab daily, 2-5 yr One 4-mg chewable tab daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not for acute asthma attacks eg, status asthmaticus. Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Avoid aspirin or NSAIDs in patients w/ known aspirin sensitivity. Neuropsychiatric events; eosinophilic conditions. Unsuitable for phenylketonurics. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Upper resp infection. Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting; elevated serum ALT, AST; rash; pyrexia.
Drug Interactions
Decreased AUC w/ phenobarb. Concomitant use w/ CYP3A4 inducers eg, phenytoin, phenobarb, rifampicin.

R03DC03 - montelukast ; Belongs to the class of leukotriene receptor antagonists. Used in the systemic treatment of obstructive airway diseases.
