Indications/Uses
Complicated skin & skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAI) in adults.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 100 mg, followed by 50 mg every 12 hr for 5-14 days.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Increased in all-cause mortality. Anaphylaxis/anaphylactoid reactions; known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines. Monotherapy in patients w/ cIAI secondary to clinically apparent intestinal perforation. Pseudomembranous colitis; acute pancreatitis; hospital-acquired pneumonia; overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms. May be associated w/ tooth discoloration. Monitor blood coagulation parameters prior to & during treatment. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Significant hepatic dysfunction & failure. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in childn <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Prolonged activated partial thromboplastin & prothrombin time, thrombocytopenia; hypoproteinaemia, hypoglycaemia, decreased appetite; dizziness, headache; phlebitis; pneumonia; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia; increased aspartate aminotransferase & alanine aminotransferase, hyperbilirubinaemia; pruritus, rash; impaired healing, inj site reaction; increased serum amylase & blood urea.
Drug Interactions
Monitor prothrombin time w/ warfarin. Affected pharmacokinetics w/ P-gp inhibitors (eg, ketoconazole, cyclosporine) & P-gp inducers (eg, rifampicin). Less effectiveness of OCs. Increased serum trough conc of calcineurin inhibitors eg, tacrolimus or cyclosporine.
