Per sachet Na bicarbonate 1.76 g, citric acid 0.72 g, Na citrate 0.63 g, tartaric acid 0.89 g
Indications/Uses
Relief of burning discomfort caused by mild UTI. Reduce formation of uric acid & cystine calculi in chronic gout. Enhance action of certain antibiotics eg, sulfonamide. Symptomatic relief of gastric hyperacidity.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken with food: Dissolve content in a glass of water.
Contraindications
Hypernatremia, overt & occult cardiac failure, severe myocardial damage, resp alkalosis, hypocalcemia, hypochloremia, hypochlorhydria, Addison's disease, acute dehydration, heat cramps. Not recommended in concomitant use w/ hexamine mandelate or hippurate therapy. Avoid concomitant use of urinary alkalinisers & quinolone antibiotics. Severe renal impairment or renal failure.
Special Precautions
HTN, heart failure, peripheral or pulmonary oedema, pre-eclampsia or other conditions associated w/ Na retention; peptic ulceration. Monitor serum electrolytes especially bicarbonates. Patients on low Na diet. Prolonged & excessive use. Concurrent use w/ corticosteroids or Al-based gels. Renal impairment & abnormalities; cirrhosis. Women of childbearing potential. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Stomach cramps, belching, flatulence, vomiting; spontaneous stomach rupture. Mild laxative effect due to incompletely absorbed tartrate component.
Drug Interactions
Increased renal clearance & decreased effects of lithium, acidic drugs eg, chlorpropamide, salicylates, tetracyclines, barbiturates. Prolonged t½ & increased effects or toxicity of basic drugs eg, amphetamines, ephedrine/pseudoephedrine. Reduced or increased rate &/or extent of absorption of drugs eg, antacids, laxative, other antibiotics. Systemic alkalosis & development of Ca stones w/ antacids. Increased Al absorption w/ Al-containing antacids. Reduced solubility of quinolones eg, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin or ofloxacin. Reduced antibacterial effect of hexamine. Additive effect w/ laxatives.
