Cefalexin
Indications/Uses
Resp tract, bone, GUT & dental infections; otitis media.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1-4 g daily in divided doses. Most infections 500 mg every 8 hr. Skin & soft tissue infections, streptococcal pharyngitis, mild & uncomplicated UTI 250 mg every 6 hr or 500 mg every 12 hr. Childn 25-50 mg/kg in divided doses. Skin & soft tissue infections, streptococcal pharyngitis, mild & uncomplicated UTI Dose to be administered every 12 hr. Most infections Childn ≥5 yr 250 mg every 8 hr. Severe infections Dosage may be doubled. Otitis media 75-100 mg/kg daily in 4 divided doses. β-haemolytic streptococcal infections At least 10 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cefalexin & other cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Penicillin sensitivity. Pseudomembranous colitis; overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms; superinfection. False +ve urinary glucose & Coombs’ test. Prolonged use. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Cap: Previous hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins, carbapenems or other β-lactam agents.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances; hypersensitivity reactions including skin rashes, urticaria, eosinophilia, fever, reactions resembling serum sickness & anaphylaxis.
Drug Interactions
Decreased efficacy of estrogen-containing OCs. Reduced excretion w/ probenecid. Increased risk of renal damage w/ aminoglycosides eg, gentamicin. Enhanced nephrotoxicity w/ loop diuretics eg, frusemide.
