Orlistat
Indications/Uses
Iin conjunction w/ a mildly hypocaloric diet for obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) & overwt (BMI ≥28 kg/m2) patients including patients w/ risk factors associated w/ obesity. In type 2 diabetic patients, provides additional glycemic control when used in combination w/ antidiabetic agents eg, metformin, sulfonylurea &/or insulin.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 cap w/ each main meal.
Administration
Should be taken with food: If a meal is missed or contains no fat, the dose may be omitted.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Chronic malabsorption syndrome, cholestasis. Not recommended in pregnancy. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Ensure adequate nutrition w/ multivit supplement use. Exclude organic causes of obesity (eg, hypothyroidism) before treatment. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomfort, oily spotting, flatus w/ discharge, fecal urgency, fatty/oily stool, oily evacuation, increased defecation & fecal incontinence.
Drug Interactions
Decreased absorption of vit A, D, E & K & β-carotene. Reduced cyclosporin plasma levels. Oral anticoagulants, amiodarone.
