Salicylic acid
Indications/Uses
2%/5%/10% oint: Hyperkeratotic & scaling skin conditions eg, seborrhoeic dermatitis, ichthyosis, psoriasis & acne. 20% oint: Warts removal.
Dosage/Direction for Use
2%/5% oint Apply sparingly to affected skin areas bd (morning & night) until improvement occurs. 10% oint Apply thin layer to affected areas once or bd (morning & night) until improvement occurs. 20% oint Apply thin layer to cover entire warts only once or bd (morning & night).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Diabetes or impaired peripheral blood circulation. Childn <2 yr.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if irritation or sensitization develops. Salicylate toxicity. Avoid use on open wounds or broken area, inflamed or normal skin around warts & on large skin area. Avoid contact w/ eyes, face, genitals & mucous membranes. Large amounts & extensive prolonged use. Concomitant use w/ benzoyl peroxide, topical retinoids; abrasive soaps & cleansers; exfoliating cosmetics or soaps; hydroquinone; protein-bound drugs; alcohol-containing prep. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn 2-12 yr. Elderly. 20% oint: Not to be used on moles, birthmarks, hairy warts, genital/anal warts.
Adverse Reactions
Contact dermatitis or skin irritation; flushing, unusually warm skin, burning sensation; skin pruritus, stinging, excessive drying & peeling.
Drug Interactions
2%/5% oint: Other topical prep mainly isotretinoin, alitretinoin, tazarotene. 10%/20% oint: Topical agents eg, benzoyl peroxide, topical retinoids; salicylate, hydroquinone; abrasive soaps & cleansers; exfoliating cosmetics or soaps; protein bound drugs; alcohol-containing prep.
