Indications/Uses

Upper & lower resp tract infections, GUT, skin & soft tissue infections, gonorrhoea, acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Usual course of therapy: 7 days (5-10 days). Adult Most infections, UTI, pyelonephritis, mild to moderate lower resp tract infections eg, bronchitis 250 mg bd. More severe lower resp tract infections or if pneumonia is suspected 500 mg bd. Uncomplicated gonorrhoea 1 g as single dose. Tab Pneumonia Cefuroxime Na 1.5 g bd IV or IM for 48-72 hr, followed by oral cefuroxime axetil 500 mg bd for 7-10 days. Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis Cefuroxime Na 750 mg tds IV or IM for 48-72 hr, followed by oral cefuroxime axetil 500 mg bd for 5-10 days. Childn Most infections 125 mg bd. Otitis media or more severe infections 250 mg bd. Oral susp Childn 3 mth-12 yr Most infections 10 mg/kg bd. Max: 250 mg daily. Otitis media or more severe infections 15 mg/kg bd. Max: 500 mg daily.

Overdosage

Administration

Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals for optimum absorption. Tab: Swallow whole, do not crush/split.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.

Special Precautions

Allergic reaction to penicillins or other β-lactams. Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms eg, enterococci & Clostridium difficile. Pseudomembranous colitis. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Pregnancy & lactation. Oral susp: Diabetic patients; phenylketonuria.

Adverse Reactions

Overgrowth of Candida; eosinophilia; headache, dizziness; GI disturbances eg, diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain; transient increase in ALT (SGPT), AST (SGOT), LDH.

Drug Interactions

Lowered bioavailability w/ drugs reducing gastric acidity. Lowered oestrogen reabsorption & reduced efficacy of combined OCs. False -ve result in ferricyanide test.
