Live attenuated varicella-zoster virus (Oka/Merck strain)
Indications/Uses
Prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) & postherpetic neuralgia; reduction of acute & chronic zoster-associated pain; immunization of individuals ≥50 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to varicella-zoster vaccine, gelatin or neomycin. Primary & acquired immunodeficiency. Immunosuppressive therapy except topical/inhaled or low-dose systemic corticosteroids, or corticosteroids used as replacement therapy. Active untreated TB. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Not to be given intravascularly. Defer vaccination in the presence of fever >38.5°C. HIV patients w/ or w/o evidence of immunosuppression. Lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Erythema, pain/tenderness, swelling, pruritus. Hematoma, warmth, induration; headache, pain in extremity.
Drug Interactions
Reduced immunogenicity w/ pneumococcal vaccines.
