Why do I need this medicine?

Acamprosate is used to help alcohol dependent patients to abstain from alcohol.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Acamprosate exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take this medicine at meal times. Try to take it at the same time each day.

The tablet should be swallowed whole. Do not divide, chew or crush the tablet.

Acamprosate must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed otherwise, as stopping it suddenly could worsen your condition.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What lifestyle changes should I make to manage my dependence to alcohol?

Eat a healthy diet and manage your stress through meditation and exercise. Avoid temptations of drinking alcohol by removing all alcohol in your home and office and distancing yourself from people who drink. Keep away from places and situations that encourage drinking. Get help from friends and family to support you in your goal of abstaining from alcohol. Continue to attend counselling while taking this medicine to reach your goal.

What side effects could I experience?

This medicine may cause any of the following side effects: diarrhoea, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, stomach wind, rash, weakness, difficulty sleeping, and anxiety.

Acamprosate may also cause decrease in sex drive and impotence. Discuss with your doctor if you are concerned about these side effects.

Acamprosate may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviour in alcohol dependent patients. As dependence to alcohol is associated with depression and an increased risk of suicide, it is important for you or your family members to monitor your condition especially at the start of treatment and if your dosage is still being adjusted. If you experience new or sudden changes in mood, behaviour, thoughts or feelings or worsening of your depression with an attempt to harm yourself or others, alert your doctor immediately.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
