Why do I need this medicine?

Aciclovir is used to treat viral infections caused by herpes virus such as cold sores and genital herpes.

How do I use this medicine?

Apply Aciclovir exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.

This medicine is available as a cream or as an ointment.

If you are given the cream follow these steps:
  1. Ensure that the face or lips are clean and dry. Aciclovir cream is not intended for use on genitals.
  2. Wash hands with soap and water before applying this medicine.
  3. Apply a sufficient amount of the cream to cover the affected area.
  4. Wash your hands after application.
If you are given the ointment, follow these steps:
  1. Ensure that the affected area is clean and dry. Aciclovir ointment is not intended for use in the eyes.
  2. Wash hands with soap and water before applying this medicine.
  3. Apply a sufficient amount of the ointment to cover the affected area. Use a rubber glove or a finger cot when applying the ointment to avoid spreading the infection.
  4. Wash your hands after application.
Avoid contact with eyes or mouth. Rinse immediately with water if this medicine gets into your eyes or mouth. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes.

Do not use with occlusive dressing unless instructed by the doctor.

Avoid unnecessarily rubbing the affected area to avoid aggravating or transferring the infection.

Aciclovir must be used regularly and within the given medication timeframe for it to be effective.

Do not stop using it unless instructed by the doctor.

What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

Do not use more than what is instructed by the doctor to make up for the missed dose.

If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not use this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen face) to Aciclovir or any similar medicines such as valaciclovir.

What should I take note of while using this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have conditions that weaken the immune system (e.g. HIV infection, bone marrow transplant).

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid breastfeeding if you have herpes sores on or near your breast.

Aciclovir does not reduce your risk of passing herpes infections. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid spreading the infection to others.

If you are going for dental work, inform your dentist that you are using this medicine.

What side effects could I experience?

Aciclovir may cause any of the following side effects: dry or cracked lips, dry or flaking skin and local burning, stinging or itching.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop using the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I use this with other medicines?

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
