Why do I need this medicine?

Amphotericin B is used to treat serious or life-threatening fungal infections.

This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.

How do I use this medicine?

Amphotericin B is to be given by intravenous infusion (into the vein). It is delivered directly into the bloodstream via the blood vessel.

Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you.

A test dose of this medicine should be administered to check if you have an allergy to Amphotericin B.

This medicine must be administered at regular intervals for it to be effective. Do not skip any dose. You must complete the entire course of the medicine.

What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?

If you miss an appointment or miss a dose, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not use Amphotericin B if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine.

What should I take note of while using this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly. Routine blood tests (e.g. blood counts, liver function tests, kidney function tests, potassium and magnesium levels in the blood) maybe needed while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.

What side effects could I experience?

Amphotericin B may cause any of the following side effects: fever, chills, headache, weakness, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, joint pain, rash, flushing and pain at the injection site.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience:

- difficulty in breathing
- fever with persistent sore throat or mouth ulcers, unusual bleeding or bruising
- muscle weakness, muscle twitching, abnormal heart rhythm (signs of low blood levels of potassium)
- muscle cramps, numbness, convulsions
- pain in the back, decreased urine output

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I use this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:

- medicines for organ transplant or certain immune disorder e.g. ciclosporin, tacrolimus
- antibiotics e.g. capreomycin, colistin, polymyxin, vancomycin
- medicines for lung infection e.g. pentamidine
- medicines for inflammation e.g. corticosteroids
- diuretics “water pills”
- medicines for heart disease e.g. digoxin
- medicines for muscle relaxation e.g. tubocurarine
- medicines for cancer e.g. cisplatin
- other medicines for fungal infections e.g. flucytosine, fluconazole, itraconazole

This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Amphotericin B.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in the refrigerator between 2-8°C.

Reconstituted Amphotericin B should be used immediately. Protect from light and keep away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
