Why do I need this medicine?

Aspirin and Ticlopidine are combined in this medicine.

Aspirin and Ticlopidine are blood thinning medicines. It prevents special cells in the blood from sticking to each other. This reduces the risk of harmful blood clots forming in your body. Blood clots that form in a blood vessel inside the heart or brain can cause a heart attack or a stroke.

This medicine is used to reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke in people who have a high risk of getting them. This includes people who have had a stroke before and are at risk of getting another stroke; and people with medical conditions that may increase their chances of getting a stroke.

Aspirin + Ticlopidine may also be used to to prevent blood clots in people who have had stents inserted into their heart arteries. It may also be used to treat other conditions such as blood clots in your lungs and legs.

How do I take this medicine?

Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take it with food or immediately after a meal with a glass of water. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Aspirin + Ticlopidine must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it suddenly as this may worsen your condition.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to medicines similar to aspirin (eg. diclofenac, ibuprofen, mefenamic acid or naproxen) or ticlopidine (eg. prasugrel, clopidogrel).

Alert your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:
  • stomach ulcers 
  • blood disorders 
  • gout or with a history of gout
  • severe liver disease 
as this medicine may not be suitable for you.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • bleeding disorders or increased risk of bleeding e.g. recent injury, surgery
  • kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do not participate in activities in which you may fall or get injured, such as contact sports. Alert your doctor if you get any unusual bruising (large bruises or several bruises) or bleeding that takes a long time to stop (for example, too much bleeding when you floss or brush your teeth).

If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine.

For as long as you are taking this medicine, you may need to have regular blood tests to check your body’s response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have blood tests.

What side effects could I experience?

Aspirin + Ticlopidine may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other side effects may include any of the following: headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea, indigestion, ringing in the ears and rash.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • unusual bruising or bleeding 
  • black, sticky stools
  • breathlessness, swelling of the face, lips, or mouth
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • other blood-thinning medicines e.g. warfarin
  • other medicines for pain and inflammation (NSAIDs) e.g. indometacin, piroxicam
  • medicines for mood disorders e.g. venlafaxine, sertraline, paroxetine, citalopram, fluoxetine
  • medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures) e.g. phenytoin, sodium valproate
  • water pills e.g. hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide
  • medicines for gout e.g. probenecid, sulfinpyrazone
  • stomach medicines e.g. metoclopramide, cimetidine
  • medicines used in organ transplant or other immune disorders e.g. methotrexate
  • medicines for high blood pressure or heart disease e.g. propanolol, digoxin
  • medicines for asthma e.g. theophylline 
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Aspirin + Ticlopidine.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
