Why do I need this medicine?

Cefixime is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the nose, ear, throat, chest and lungs, or bladder.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Cefixime exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with or without food. Take with main meals or with a glass of milk to reduce stomach discomfort.

This medicine is available as a tablet, capsule or oral suspension.

If you are taking tablets or capsules, swallow it whole with a full glass of water. Do not divide, chew or crush it.

If you are taking an oral suspension, shake the bottle well before you take it, to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your infection.

Take Cefixime at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Cefixime or any other similar antibiotics such as cefalexin, cefuroxime, and other cephalosporin antibiotics.

Alert your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin antibiotics, for example amoxicillin, ampicillin and cloxacillin. Penicillins are related to cephalosporins and if you are allergic to one, you may be allergic to the other too.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • history of haemolytic anaemia (a type of anaemia where the red blood cells are prematurely destroyed) caused by cephalosporin antibiotics
  • history of stomach or bowel disease
  • kidney disease or undergoing dialysis
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Cefixime to a child.

If you are going for certain laboratory tests (e.g. urine glucose or protein tests, Coombs’ test), inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine.

Your doctor may need to perform blood tests to make sure that your liver and kidney function is normal while you are being treated with this medicine for prolonged period of time. Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need to have these tests.

What side effects could I experience?

Cefixime may cause fits or seizures, feeling confused, feeling less alert or aware of things than usual and stiffness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other side effects may include any of the following: diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, stomach pain, stomach wind, headache, joint pain, and fever.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea accompanied by stomach pain or fever
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • unusual bleeding or bruising, frequent and persistent sore throat with fever
  • feeling confused, difficulty in controlling movements or coordination, fits or seizures
  • rashes with peeling of the skin or blistering of the lips, mouth or eyes accompanied by fever
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • warfarin (blood-thinning medicine)
  • probenecid (medicine for gout)
  • carbamazepine (medicine for fits or seizures)
  • nifedipine (medicine for high blood pressure)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Cefixime.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Refrigerate the oral suspension (between 2-8°C) once you have mixed the powder with water. Do not freeze it otherwise it will become less effective. Throw away any unused portion after 14 days.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
