Why do I need this medicine?

Clarithromycin is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, lungs or skin.

This medicine may also be used together with other medicines to treat stomach ulcer.

Clarithromycin may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Clarithromycin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

This medicine is available as a tablet or as an oral suspension.

If you are taking an extended-release tablet, take it together with food or immediately after a meal. Swallow it whole, do not divide, chew or crush the tablet.

If you are taking an oral suspension, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose. You may take it with or without food.

Try to take it at the same time each day.

Take Clarithromycin at regular intervals. Complete the entire course of medicine.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to similar medicines such as azithromycin, erythromycin or any other macrolide antibiotics.

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:

- severe liver disease
- severe kidney disease
- heart disease such as irregular heartbeat
as Clarithromycin may not be suitable for you.

DO NOT take Clarithromycin with medicines used for mood disorder, stomach disorder, migraine, gout or high cholesterol. Please see section “Can I take this with other medicines?” below for more information.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:

- disorder of the blood vessel of the heart
- kidney disease
- myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness disorder)

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

For as long as you are taking this medicine, you may need to have regular blood tests to check your body’s response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.

Practice good hygiene to reduce the chances of getting infected again.

What side effects could I experience?

Clarithromycin may cause any of the following side effects: headache, diarrhoea, nausea, unusual change in the sense of taste, vomiting, stomach pain and stomach wind.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop taking the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Do not take Clarithromycin with the following medicines: medicines for stomach disorder e.g. cisapride, medicines for mood disorder e.g. pimozide, medicines to treat fungal infections e.g. astemizole, medicines for gout e.g. colchicine, cholesterol-lowering medicines e.g. lovastatin and medicines for migraine e.g. ergotamine.

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:

- medicines for high blood pressure or heart disease e.g. digoxin, verapamil, felodipine, quinidine, disopyramide, amiodarone
- blood-thinning medicines e.g. warfarin
- medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures) e.g. carbamazepine
- medicines to treat fungal infections e.g. fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole
- medicines for TB (lung infection known as tuberculosis) e.g. rifampicin
- medicines to treat viral infections e.g. etavirine, ritonavir

This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Clarithromycin.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Once you have mixed the powder with water, the oral suspension can be stored at room temperature of up to 30°C. Do not refrigerate it otherwise it may turn into a gel and become ineffective. Throw away any unused portion after 14 days.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
