Why do I need this medicine?

Cyproheptadine helps to relieve symptoms of allergy, such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy and watery eyes. It also relieves allergic skin conditions such as hives.

This medicine is also used to treat migraines and similar headaches.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Cyproheptadine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by the doctor.

This medicine may be taken with or without food. Take it with food to reduce stomach discomfort. Try to take it at the same time each day.

You may stop taking Cyproheptadine once you feel better, unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have:

- glaucoma (increased pressure in the eyes)
- stomach or intestinal ulcers
- narrowing or blockage between the stomach and intestine
- prostate enlargement or bladder problems
as this medicine may not be suitable for you.

Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with this medicine.

Do not take this medicine if you are elderly and weak, as you may be more sensitive to the side effects. You will be advised by your doctor if this applies to you.

Do not give Cyproheptadine to premature or newborn babies, or children younger than 2 years old. Do not give Cyproheptadine to any child unless specifically instructed by the child's doctor.

Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking or have taken a medicine to treat depression known as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as moclobemide,phenelzine and tranylcypromine in the last 14 days.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

- lung problems, such as asthma or bronchitis
- overactive thyroid gland
- high blood pressure
- heart disease

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant.

What side effects could I experience?

Cyproheptadine causes drowsiness. This is common and should disappear gradually as you get used to the medicine. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other side effects may include any of the following: headache, confusion, tiredness, restlessness, nervousness, excitation (especially in children), difficulty in sleeping, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, dry of the mouth, nose and throat, ringing in the ears, thickening of phlegm, shaking, excessive sweating, increase or loss of appetite and weight gain.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:

- rapid or irregular heart beat
- faintness
- shortness of breath
- yellowing of skin and eyes
- rashes, itch and swelling
- numbness or tingling sensation in the hands or feet
- spinning sensation (vertigo)

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any medicines for anxiety or depression e.g. citalopram, escitalopram, fluvoxamine.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
