Why do I need this medicine?

Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol are combined together in this medicine.

Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol is used to treat signs of increase of androgen levels in women such as severe acne, oily skin, and excessive growth of facial or body hair. This medicine can also be used as an oral contraceptive pill in these women.

This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you miss a dose and it is less than 12 hours before the next dose is due, take the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

If it is more than 12 hours before the next dose is due, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • blood clotting disorder or history of blood clotting disorder 
  • formation of blood clots in the deep vein of your leg or blood clots that travel to the lungs from the leg 
  • current stroke or history of stroke 
  • heart attack or chest pain 
  • very high blood pressure 
  • diabetes 
  • migraine 
  • unexplained vaginal bleeding 
  • cancer of the breast or genital organs 
  • liver disease e.g. liver tumours 
as Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol may not be suitable for you.

Do not take Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with this medicine, alert your doctor immediately. Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol may cause harm to your unborn child.

Do not take this medicine if you are breastfeeding.

This medicine is not intended for use in men.

Do not take Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol with medicines to treat Hepatitis C infection and other birth control pills. Please see the section “Can I take this with other medicines?” below for more information.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • risk factors for blood clot formation e.g. obesity, prolonged immobilization, increased age (>35 years old), smoking, family history of blood clot disorder, heart disease, abnormal levels of cholesterol and fat in the blood 
  • depression 
  • systemic lupus erythematosus (autoimmune disease that causes inflammation) 
  • gallbladder disease 
  • inflammation of the bowels 
  • history of chloasma (facial skin discoloration) 
  • kidney disease 
  • hereditary angioedema (swelling of the limbs, face) 
Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol does not lower the risk of getting HIV infection or any other sexually transmitted diseases. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid getting these diseases.

This medicine may cause sensitivity to light. Apply sunscreen when going outdoors and avoid direct or prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps. 

If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, or certain laboratory tests, inform your doctor that you are taking Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol .

You may need to have a pregnancy test before beginning to take this medicine. You may also need to check your blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and undergo physical examinations regularly to assess the appropriateness of the medicine for you. Your doctor will advise you how often you need to have these tests.

If you smoke, you should try to quit. Smoking is harmful to your blood pressure, heart and overall health. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about ways to kick your smoking habit.

What side effects could I experience?

Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol may cause any of the following side effects: headache, weight changes, nausea, menstrual changes (bleeding, spotting, or bleeding between cycles), menstrual pain, mood changes, decrease sex drive, breast pain and tendernes.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • shortness of breath and chest pain which may reach your left arm 
  • slurring or trouble speaking with loss of vision 
  • swelling, numbness, or pain in your arms and legs and other parts of your body 
  • unusual changes in mood or behaviour (being too depressed, agitated, or having compulsive and impulsive behaviour) 
  • irregular heartbeat 
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes 
  • fever with chills 
  • any lumps that you may see or feel 
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Do not take Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol with other birth control pills and medicines for Hepatitis C infection (e.g. ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir, dasabuvir).

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • medicines to treat TB (lung infection known as tuberculosis) e.g. rifampicin, isoniazid
  • medicines to treat fungal infection e.g. griseofulvin, ketoconazole 
  • certain antibiotics e.g. clarithromycin, erythromycin 
  • medicines for pain and inflammation e.g. phenylbutazone, naproxen, etoricoxib 
  • medicines for epilepsy or (fits or seizures) e.g. phenytoin, carbamazepine, lamotrigine
  • medicine used in organ transplant or certain immune diseases e.g. ciclosporin
  • herbal medicines e.g. St. John’s Wort 
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
