Why do I need this medicine?

Dantrolene is used to treat and prevent malignant hyperthermia (disease causing fast rise in body temperature).

How do I use this medicine?

Dantrolene injection is to be given intravenously (into the vein). It is delivered directly into the bloodstream via the blood vessel.

Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you.

What should I take note of while using this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:

- heart disease
- liver disease
- lung disease

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What side effects could I experience?

Dantrolene may cause drowsiness, dizziness, decrease in grip strength, weakness of leg muscles and lightheadedness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other side effects include any of the following: headache, muscle weakness, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation, slurred speech, and pain, swelling, redness or itching at the injection site.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:

- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- shortness of breath
- difficulty swallowing
- photosensitivity (sensitivity to sunlight)

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Can I use this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:

- medicines for high blood pressure e.g. diltiazem, verapamil
- muscle relaxant medicines e.g. vecuronium

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
